Dissimilarity in Recognition and a Depraved Country: A Tale of Fate
Every state, Every District, Every street there’s some talent capable of getting a gold or silver medal for India. These talents are left buried in front of our eyes. Corruption has become synonymous with sports administration in India. Whether it is the most popular cricket or hockey or weightlifting, most of the sports authorities in India have come under attack due to corruption charges India does not lack talent, it lacks the support n training facilities that athletes need
Ariyamangalam is said to be the garbage depot of Trichy and alongside it lives Mohammed Ashik Aka the Golden Boy lives. He is one of the Youngsters who just looks at opportunities as a wish. Pursuing B.Sc. Computer science, this boy has won in every competition he has participated in. When he says “Disability wasn’t the hardest thing in my life but the opportunity was” we can feel how India has degraded itself for years just by praising and promoting cricket.
He was born with Cleft foot which means being born without toes in one leg. His financial background also wasn’t well established, Parents being Florists and having two younger siblings’ life never went easy on him, He never did easy too. Regardless of the difficulties he had athletics was the only thing that gave him relief but later it changed his life in a way he never thought of.
Manikandan Arumugam (Asian Olympics winner) is who coaches him for no cost. He has participated in High jump, Long Jump and 100m,200m Dash, and has never failed to bag a medal to his name. Seeing him as a role model now his brother has started to coach with him.
Competing with 150 competitors to winning his way to the top 6 then toping the gold medal in State level Paralympics is the real start to his Dream. His only goal is to win gold for India in the Paralympics( Olympics for disabled). He used to say to himself that “When others can why can I?” this has helped him power his run for his dreams
The major reasons why we stand underdeveloped in the field of sports are just 5 things which are Corruption and Mismanagement, Social and economic inequalities, lack of infrastructure, Allocation of Quota/ resources, Policy voids.
The Govt. has taken some initiatives in recent years from the Khelo India program at the cost of Rs.1,756 crore for the period 2017–18 to 2019–20. Appointing foreign coaches and support staff to provide the best training for the upcoming 2020 Olympics.
Despite the measures taken by the government, the sports ecosystem is of poor quality in the country. In a country with a Crowd of over 1.25 billion, the existing sports infrastructure is not satisfactory. The lack of world-class infrastructure and the inadequate support of the government is reflected in the poor performance of Indian athletes in major international events like the Olympics. If we use our talents and enrich them with proper resources, Surely India will be glorified by its performance worldwide. When they can why can’t we?
